Questions we get all the time

Can I hike in the desert on my own? Can I hike in the desert in the summer? When is the best time to come to the desert?

These are just some of the questions we get on a regular basis and so we will be happy to answer them here bellow:

01

02

Can I hike on my own in the desert?

The Negev desert is very safe and easy to hike on your own. The trails are marked very well, It really is hard to get lost on them.  Once you get to the Green Backpackers hostel, you will get all the hiking info you will need; Maps, directions and overall orientation. Hiking on your own in the Negev desert is a wonderful experience, though in most cases, you will probably find a hiking buddy or two at the hostel...

For more information about hiking in the Negev desert you can also look up - Negevtrails.com

Do I need a car for my Negev desert experience?

The Negev desert and the area around Mitzp Ramon especially is very accessible by bus. The buses are very frequent (about twice an hour) and run from 5:00 - 22:00.  You can travel for over a week in the area and still have plenty to see and do. The Negev Ride Guide map which you will get at the hostel once you arrive, and website which you can check out before coming, will give you a good  idea of all the things you can do in the region without a car.

03

Is there an advantage to arriving by car

There are some amazing hikes you can do with a car that you can not do without, and so The Green Backpackers hostel staff will be happy to give you directions to them and  make your car rental worth it.

Having a car can also help you if you want to see the dead sea area or get to Eilat quickly from us.

04

Is there parking near the hostel?

There is plenty of parking space need the hostel. Please just make sure to park as close to our gate as possible as we are trying to be considerate of our neighbors.

05

Will I have what to do in the Negev if I don't like hiking?

There are many things to see and do in Mitzpe Ramon and around. Plenty of activities such as desert jeep tours, horse back riding, star gazing or experiencing the unique night life that evolved here through the years in the Spice Quarter - The hippy part of Mitzpe Ramon.

06

Can I Get to Avdat national park from the hostel?

Avdat and Ein Avdat national parks are a 20 minute drive by car / 35 minutes ride by bus, from the hostel.

The bus leaves from right in front of the hostel almost every half hour. It is very easy to get there from us and our guests do this trip on a daily basis. You can get more info about the amazing Ein Avdat trail on the NegevTrails website, or ask us about it when you arrive at the hostel.

07

Do you have any guided tours or hikes?

As hiking is so easy and safe in the Negev desert, and guides are pretty costly, Te hostel does not run any regular guided tours. There is a desert guided jeep tour in the Ramon crater every weekday at 10:00am which you can join.

If you still want to hire a tour guide - we would be happy to recommend one for you.

08

Can you hike in the Negev desert in the summer?

You can hike in the summer but it does require some adjustments though, as you will need to wake up really early and leave by 5:00 - 5:30 am, and be back by 10:30am. Then you can have a long "siesta" and go out again hiking around 17:00 till 20:00.

09

How can I get from Ovda Airport to Mitzpe Ramon

Ovda air port is not what one might expect from an airport. It is located in the heart of the Negev desert half way between Mitzpe Ramon and Eilat. It is actually situated in an air-force army base and you will not find any trains or rental companies there. There are 5 buses a day that go from Ovda airport to Mitzpe Ramon (sun-Thu). They are an Egged bus, Number 392, and they arrive at Ovdat airport around: 7:00 am, 10:00 am, 14:30, 16:00 and 18:00. These are estimated times as the bus leaves from Eilat and can be 15 -25 minutes late...

If you arrive on the weekend (Fri-Saturday), You would most likely need to go to Eilat as hitch-hiking on the weekend is a bit of a challenge.
